Tanabata in Minkaen: July 5, 6

Tanabata is a Japanese festival also known as the Star Festival.
You can write down your wishes on a strip of paper called danzaku and decorate sasa (bamboo branches) with it.
During this event, original strips are distributed at the Kawasaki Municipal Science Museum to viewers of the planetarium program for children. Those who come with the original strip shall be presented a short branch of sasa in Minkaen.

Folktales Telling by Mangekyo on July 5

Folktales storytelling around the fireplace, usually on the first Saturday of every month. *may be subject to change.
  • Time: 14:00 ~ 14:30
  • Seating capacity: 30 participants (first come, first served)
  • Fee: admission fee only

Annual Event Exhibition “Tanabata”: July 5~July 8

Workshop of Paper Balloon Lantern

Make a lantern using paper balloon.
Take a photo with the Tanabata decorations in the museum as a background.
*Please be noted that the instructions is given in Japanese.

  • Time: (1)10:00 (2)11:00 (3)13:30 (4)14:30 *40 mins for each  
  • Eligibility: anybody over 3rd grade of elementary school *An elementary schooler must be accompanied by a guardian (1 accompany at most).
  • Capacity: 6 participants for each time slot
  • Fee: 600 Yen (pay by cash on the day) *admission fee to Nihon Minkaen required in addition
  • Admission: Numbered tickets are handed out from 9:40 at the venue.

Mini Special Exhibition “Yōkai from Old Folk Tools”: July 1 ~ August 31

This exhibition introduces the Yōkai (monsters) that have been passed down at the former locations of the folk houses in our museum, as well as the Yōkai associated with the folk tools and the folk houses that were featured by the folklorist Kunio Yanagita in his "Yōkai Dangi".

  • Time: 9:30 ~ 17:00
  • Fee: the admission fee only
  • Place: the exhibition room in the main building

*There is a gallery talk on the mini special exhibition, and a gallery talk for children.

Annual Event Exhibition “The Summer Styled Interior in the Hara House”: June 5 ~ September 15

In summer, the shoji (translucent paper sliding door) is replaced with sudo, a door made of fine bamboo strips allowing air to pass through, so that the room becomes airy and cool.

Mini-Exhibition at Traditional Indigo Dyeing Workshop “the Fascination of Indigo Dyed T-shirts”: May 14~August 24

We exhibit indigo dyed T-shirts with various patterns, which are made by our staff using various techniques.
  • Date: Wednesday, May 14 ~ Sunday, August 24, 2025
  • Time: 9:30 ~ 17:00
  • Fee: Free (inside Dento Kogeikan only). Admission fee required if you visit Minkaen
