Traditional Games of the Old Days

You can enjoy some games of the old days such as wheel spinning, play with bamboo toys and experience bamboo craft. (*Some may finish earlier when the materials run out.)

Demonstration of Reeling Silk from Cocoons

We demonstrate how to reel silk off boiled cocoons, and etc.

  • Dates: May 5 (Tuesday, national holiday)
  • Time: 13:00 ~ 14:00
  • Fee: Admission fee to the museum only
  • Free to participate on the day
  • In cooperation with: Mingu-Seisaku-Gijutsu-Hozonkai (Society for Preserving Arts and Skills of Making Folk Tools)

Workshop of Kabuto Paper-crafting

In this workshop, you can craft a kabuto (a helmet worn by a samurai warrior), by folding a large piece of paper (78cm×78cm). The kabuto is actually wearable.
*The instruction during the workshop is in Japanese only.
*The kit for crafting a kabuto is also for sale at the workshop and our museum shop.

  • Date: May 5 (Tuesday, national holiday), 2026
  • Time: (1)10:00~, (2)11:00~, (3)13:00~, (4)14:00~, (5)15:00~ *About 50 minutes for each
  • Everyone can participate. However, a child under 3rd grade must be accompanied by 1 guardian.
  • Capacity: 10 participants for each time slot
  • Fee: 600 Yen (Pay by cash at the workshop) *Admission fee to our museum required in addition)
  • Admission: Numbered tickets are handed out from 9:30 on the day at the venue

Sales of Bamboo Crafts and Woven Works by Mingi-kai

Bamboo crafts and woven works made by Mingi-kai (Society for Preserving Arts and Skills of Making folk tools) are offered at reasonable price.
    * In smaller scale if it rains.

Trying On Folk Wears

You can try on folk wears such as straw coat, boots, sandals, and experience carrying straw rice bags with a pole.

  • Time: 10:00 ~ 12:00, 13:00 ~ 15:00 * in smaller scale if it rains

Children’s Festival

Various events are prepared for children and their family!

These events includes trying on folk wears, traditional games, crafting workshops, demonstration of reeling silk from cocoons, folk story telling, gallery talk for children and etc..

*Please refrain from sketching using chairs or easels, or taking photographs using tripods, as it is expected to be crowded.

Decorations for May, including warrior's helmet, are displayed, wishing for the robust growth of boys.

  • Place: 0. The Hara House, (the main building: until May 12 Tuesday)

Café in the Folk House “Utsuroi” in Spring

Café in the folk house is open this spring for a limited period!
Beside Japanese black tea and baked sweets, daily specials including soup and bread, are served.
Please drop in and have a relaxing time in the Hara house which is an Important Cultural Property of Kanagawa Prefecture. *Some food can be taken away.

Mini-Exhibition at Traditional Indigo Dyeing Workshop “Tango no Sekku”

Indigo-dyed works with patterns associated with "Tango no Sekku" (the Boys' Festival), koinobori (carp-shaped streamer) and etc., are on exhibit.

There are gallery talks for the Children on the special exhibition "Living in Gokayama - 30th Anniversary of the Registration as a World Heritage Site".

Special Exhibition “Living in Gokayama – 30th Anniversary of the Registration as a World Heritage Site”: October 1 ~ May 24

Three Gassho-style houses from the Gokayama region of Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture have been relocated to the Minkaen.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the registration of the Gassho-style Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, the home of these three houses, as a World Heritage Site, a special exhibition will be held focusing on the lifestyle and culture of the Gokayama region.
