Tanabata in Minkaen

Tanabata is a Japanese festival also known as the Star Festival. You can write down your wishes on a strip of paper called tanzaku and decorate sasa (bamboo branches) with it.
During this event, original strips are distributed at the Kawasaki Municipal Science Museum to viewers of the planetarium program for children. Those who come to Minkaen with the original strip shall be presented a short branch of sasa.

Workshop of Photography in Minkaen – A Day to Improve Photography Skills Using Folk Houses as Setting

After learning an overview of Minkaen, the folk house museum, and some photography techniques, we will go out to the open air part of the museum to take photos of the folk houses and other structures. The workshop will conclude with presentations by participators and feedback from the instructor. This is a casual workshop where you can enjoy a stroll while experiencing history and learning photography at the same time.

  • Date: July 4 (Saturday), 2026 * July 11 (Saturday) as backup date in case it rains
  • Time: 13:00 ~ 15:30
  • Place: 0. The Hara House, other cultural heritage buildings within the museum
  • Everyone older than elementary schooler can participate (An elementary schooler must be accompanied by 1 guardian)
  • Fee: 3,000 Yen (Admission fee to the museum exempted)
  • Capacity: 10 participants. Reservation required.

Annual Event Exhibition “The Summer Styled Interior in the Hara House”

In summer, the shoji (translucent paper sliding door) is replaced with sudo, a door made of fine bamboo strips allowing air to pass through, so that the room becomes airy and cool.

Special Exhibition of Traditional Indigo Dyeing Workshop “Inheriting the Indigo -Encountering Fabrics in a Folk House-“

Dyeing fabrics with indigo and continuing to use them — this practice has been handed down through the generations as a part of everyday life.

This exhibition will be held as a special exhibition of Traditional Indigo Dyeing Workshop. The world of indigo dyeing, normally presented at the Traditional Indigo Dyeing Workshop, will this time be introduced in the exhibition room of our museum.

We will showcase the process and beauty of indigo dyeing, and through actual dyed fabrics, we hope to convey the charm of indigo, which is created by human hands and the passage of time.
